In a long-awaited move, Google announced the Android XR operating system designed specifically for augmented reality (XR) devices. Android XR aims to remove the boundaries between the virtual and real worlds and provide users with a more integrated experience.
What does Google Android XR promise?
One of the cornerstones of the Android XR platform will be compatibility with existing Android apps. Supporting apps from the Google Play Store will provide users with a comprehensive software library. Google also said that new apps and games designed specifically for Android XR will be added in the coming period.
The tech giant also said it will expand its XR initiatives beyond glasses and develop Android-based smart glasses with Qualcomm partners Lynx, Sony and XREAL. Prototype glasses are planned to be developed through real-world testing.
An important part of this breakthrough will be the Project Moohan glasses developed in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm. Positioned as a competitor to Apple Vision Pro, the device offers the opportunity to switch between the virtual and real world.
In the virtual world, Project Moohan users will have access to popular Google apps such as Gemini, Google TV, Google Photos, YouTube and Chrome. Gemini, in particular, will stand out by guiding users.
According to Shahram Izadi, General Manager of Google XR, the new operating system is built on the principle of openness. This approach will give users a wider choice of devices and access to popular apps.
